Determine the Correct Collar size for your dog
** Prong Collar **,
** Nylon Dog Collar **,
** Leather Collar **
A pet training collar should rest high on your pet's neck without fitting too loose or too tight. Use a tape measurer to measure around your pet's neck where the collar will rest (high on the neck). Add on 2 to 3 more inches to determine the correct collar you should buy. If the measurement is in between sizes go up a size. If you are buying a collar for a puppy remember that puppies grow very quickly. You must check often to insure that the collar has not become too tight. |
|
Using a flexible measuring tape (or leash), measure from just behind the front legs all the way around your dog. What you are measuring is the circumference of the body at the point behind the front legs. Select the proper size using that measurement. |
** Chain-Slip Collars **
Whether you need a big dog training collar or a small dog training collar measuring for collar size is very important. For chain-slip collars, you want to avoid having too much or too little slack, or the collar will not work properly. The collar should have 2 ½" – 3" of extra chain when the collar is pulled snug on your dogs neck. The collar is used to give a quick correction and an immediate release. If the collar is always tight around your dogs neck he will become confused and not respond well to training. The training collar must also be placed on your dogs neck correctly. Yes, there is a right way and a wrong way. Most training methods have you place your dog on your left side. The training collar is then slipped over your dogs neck while he is in this position. As you place the collar over your pets neck you will make sure that the collars chain slack is on the top of the dogs neck. In other words, when you hook up the leash to your dogs collar, the leash and collar become a straight line that goes around your pets neck starting on top and connecting again from underneath. This allows you to make a quick correction and the collar releases or loosens immediately. If the collar is upside down, the collar will not release and will stay tight around your dogs neck. Hence correct collar size is very important to insure that the collar can release or loosen after a correction. |
** Pronged Collars **
For a pronged collar, measure around the dog's neck just below the ears. Use this measurement to order your pet's collar. A pronged collar should be snug and ride high on your dog's neck. This type of collar is very effective for those strong dogs that do not respond well to the regular chain-slip collar |
